Education Is Also About Guidance: The Role of the Educator in Developing Jewish Identity

Education is not only about transmitting knowledge. It is also about supporting young people as they discover who they are, the values they want to live by, and the role they want to play in their community.

For Jewish educational institutions, this dimension has particular importance. Education can help strengthen Jewish identity, a sense of belonging, and the connection between values and everyday decisions.

The Método Sholem positions the educator as a guide and facilitator. Through videos, leadership examples, gamified activities, and a reflective Journal, students have concrete opportunities to think about their own decisions, values, and ways of leading.

The coordinator does not need to become another source of content. Their role is to support the process: ask questions, encourage reflection, and help students connect what they are learning to situations in their own lives.

In its version for Jewish institutions, the Método Sholem also includes a dedicated component focused on strengthening Jewish identity and concludes with an activity connected to Sholem’s leadership rules.

The goal is not to tell a young person who they should be. It is to give them the tools to discover, build, and live their identity with values and purpose.
